West Virginia State Motto

State mottoes may be said to reflect the character and beliefs of the citizens of the state, or more accurately, the citizens of the state when they were adopted. State mottoes can help us gain insight into the history of a state. [What is a motto? ]

The West Virginia Constitution

West Virginia's state motto was adopted as an element of its official seal. The following information is excerpted from the West Virginia Constitution, Article 2, Section 2-7.

Article II. The State.
SECTION 2-7.

2-7. "Montani Semper Liberi" -- State seal. The present seal of the state, with its motto, "Montani Semper Liberi," shall be the great seal of the state of West Virginia, and shall be kept by the secretary of state, to be used by him officially, as directed by law.
