South Carolina State Popular Music

Beach Music   Adopted: March 27, 2001

Other states have adopted songs, marches, odes, and anthems. They've adopted musical theatre and musical instruments.

Only two states, South Carolina and Kentucky, have chosen to honor a particular type of music to represent them.

South Carolina has adopted two musical forms; spiritual music (official music, 1999) and beach music (official popular music, 2001).

AN ACT

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 1-1-689 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT BEACH MUSIC IS DESIGNATED AS THE OFFICIAL STATE POPULAR MUSIC OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

Findings

SECTION 1. The General Assembly finds that during this century and especially during the last fifty years, the development of beach music has contributed tremendously to the enjoyment of the citizens of our State and has become synonymous with South Carolina and certain of its dances, including the Shag. The General Assembly further finds that it is appropriate to recognize beach music in this manner.

Beach music designated state popular music

Carolina Beach Music: The Classic Years, by Rick Simmons. 208 pages. The History Press (April 29, 2011) Just as the dances of beach music have their twists and turns, so, too, do the stories behind the hits made popular in shag haunts from Atlantic Beach to Ocean Drive and the Myrtle Beach Pavilion. In Carolina Beach Music, local author and beach music enthusiast Rick Simmons draws on firsthand accounts from the legendary performers and people behind the music. Simmons reveals the true meaning behind "Oogum Boogum," uncovers just what sparked a fistfight between Ernie K. Doe and Benny Spellman at the recording session of "Te-Ta-Te-Ta-Ta" and examines hundreds of other true events that shaped the sounds of beach music.

Shagging in the Carolinas (Images of America), by Fessa John Hook. 128 pages. Publisher: Arcadia Publishing; 1 edition (June 19, 2006) Shagging in the Carolinas is a history of dance, romance, and the New South. The Shag defied social conventions as carefree white teenagers were inspired by the possibilities inherent in improvisational black dance and music. This is the story of how Southern society's emerging middle class embraced its multicultural roots while its political leaders continued to debate and deny the outcome of the Civil War. These are the unique people and circumstances that nurtured the evolution of Shag and Beach Music at places like the "jump joints" of Carolina Beach, the inland lake retreats, and the pavilions of Ocean Drive, Atlantic, Folly, Wrightsville, and Tybee beaches. With lively music and dancers, the Shag was popular at famous dance clubs, teen canteens, and armories. Venues such as the Coachman and IV, the Cellar, the Bushes, the Embers Clubs, and the Beach Club at Myrtle Beach are captured within these pages. The early pioneers and iconoclasts of dancing brought about a cultural revolution, embodied today by the many societies, competitions, and innumerable entertainers and bands that continue the Beach Music tradition.
