The Alaskan malamute was designated as Alaska's state dog as a result of a three year effort by students at Polaris K-12 School in Anchorage, Alaska. According to one Polaris kindergartener, the idea for a state dog was inspired by her grandmother, a second grade teacher from North Carolina. She relates that, while visiting in Anchorage, Grandma Shirley spent time with the Polaris K-12 School kindergarten class telling them about North Carolina and the state symbols of North Carolina.
You see, my grandma Shirley teaches second grade in North Carolina and she wanted to teach us about things from where she came from. One of the first things she taught us was about her state's symbols. We learned that their state dog is a plott hound. She wanted to know what Alaska's state dog was and we all looked at each other. Nobody knew for sure what it was! Later, we found out we didn't even have a state dog and this is where it all began.
The Alaskan malamute was officially declared Alaska's official state dog when Governor Sean Parnell signed House Bill No. 14 into law on May 12, 2010.
The effective date of the law was August 10, 2010.
