The map to the right shows the location of Conecuh County within the State of Alabama.

Conecuh County is located in the south-central part of Alabama within the East Gulf Coastal Plain physiographic region.

Created from a part of Monroe County, Conecuh County was established by an Act of the Alabama Territorial legislature on February 13, 1818.

The name of the county was derived from the Muscogee (Creek) term koha anaka. The term has been variously translated as meaning "land of cane," "near canebrakes" or "polecat's head."

Hampton Ridge served as Conecuh County's first seat. It was moved to Sparta in 1830. The county seat was moved again in 1866 after Sparta was burned in a Federal raid during the Civil War. Evergreen became its new home.

Evergreen, referred to as "The Emerald City," is centrally located in Conecuh County along Interstate 65.
