The map to the right shows the location of Covington County within the State of Alabama.

Covington County is located in southern Alabama within the East Gulf Coastal Plain physiographic region. Its southern boundary borders the State of Florida. The bulk of Conecuh National Forest occupies a large portion of the southwestern corner of the county.

Covington County was established by an Act of the Alabama State Legislature on December 17, 1821. During the unstable period of Reconstruction after the Civil War, Covington County was briefly renamed Jones County. It reverted to Covington County before the year's end.

The county was named for General Leonard Wailes Covington, a War of 1812 veteran.

In 1824, the county seat was located in Montezuma, on the Conecuh River. In 1844, after repeated flooding, the county seat was moved to Andalusia where it remains today.
