The map to the right shows the location of Crenshaw County within the State of Alabama.

Crenshaw County is located in southern Alabama within the East Gulf Coastal Plain physiographic region. The Conecuh River runs along part of the county's southern border.

Formed from portions of Butler, Coffee, Covington, Pike and Lowndes counties, Crenshaw County was established on November 30, 1866.

The county was named for South Carolinian Judge Anderson Crenshaw who served as mayor of Cahaba, a circuit court judge, state Supreme Court judge and as chancellor of the Southern Division of Alabama courts.

Crenshaw County's first county seat was established in Rutledge, to the west of the Patsaliga River.

In the early 1890s, the Montgomery and Florida Railroad was persuaded to forego its intended destination, Rutledge, and instead terminate in the new town of Luverne on the east side of the Patsaliga River. As a result, Rutledge lost business and population to Luverne.

Today, Luverne, only a few miles from Rutledge, serves as the county seat of Crenshaw County.
