state rises above sea level. As you can see, about 1/2 of North Carolina resides at, or less than 500 feet above,
sea level. From sea level, at the Atlantic Ocean, the land rises to a high point of 6,684 feet above sea level
in the west.
Mount Mitchell is the highest point in North Carolina and the highest point east of the Mississippi River. It rises to 6,684 feet above sea level (396 feet higher than Mount Washington in New Hampshire) in the Black Mountains about 35 miles northeast of Asheville. |
