13 Original Colonies
On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence and, in doing so, separated itself from the governance of Great Britain. On July 19, 1776, the Congress ordered the Declaration of Independence engrossed (final copy prepared) and signed by its members. On August 2, 1776, the 56 members of the Continental Cogress began signing the engrossed copy of the Declaration of Independence.
